Delta, UK firm sign MOU on $250m leisure project

Delta State Government and SARNER PFM of United Kingdom (UK) =
have=20
signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Abuja on the=20
establishment of a $250-million Delta State Leisure=20
Destination.
The MOU was signed by the State =
Commissioner for=20
Culture and Tourism, Mr Richard Mofe Damijo and while Mr =
Ross Magri,=20
managing director of SARNER UK signed for the=20
company.
According to a statement made available to =
NAN on=20
Wednesday in Lagos by the state government, the project =
tagged "The=20
Delta State Leisure Destination" will provide for a Tourism =
and=20
Leisure Village in Warri and Asaba axis of the=20
state.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Managing =
Director of SARNER Nigeria, Princess Abiodun Oyefusi, said =
that the=20
tourist village would be the first of its kind in Africa =
with=20
different tourism components like wildlife and water=20
park.
She explained that the company chose to =
establish the=20
project in Nigeria because of the absence of such world =
class=20
project and the loss of revenue to other countries with such =
potentials.
Oyefusi said that work would begin by =
November=20
this year and that the project would be completed by =
December=20
2011.
"The tourism village which will house different =
tourism=20
potentials will change the life and face of tourism in =
Nigeria,=20
create employment for about 10,000 people when fully =
operational,"=20
she said.
In his speech, Mofe Damijo explained that =
the=20
project would be sited in Warri and the Asaba axis and would =
consist=20
of wildlife component, accommodation, water park and =
transportation=20
unit.
"By the time we complete this twin project, it =
will=20
change the face of tourism in Delta State and affect the =
lives of=20
the people positively, because it will create employment and =
ensure=20
the establishment of other small scale industries," he=20
said.
Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State =
expressed the=20
commitment of his administration to the success of the =
project,=20
stressing that it would boost tourism in the =
state.
He said=20
the state government would apply for an Export Free Zone to =
enhance=20
the success of the project.
"It is a project we are =
very=20
serious about and we will ensure that it is completed on =
schedule.=20
Apart from the leisure village, the project will provide =
employment=20
and develop the state," he said.
